Using The Mind to Heal the Body
by Dr. Keli Henault, PhD LMSW, MHT (10/07)
I'm absolutely amazed at how many adults accept illness as part of their everyday life. The good news is that if people are willing to look past the limitations of conventional medicine, they can achieve a quality of life that far exceeds their expectations. I'm not implying that conventional medicine is not a necessity because in my opinion it is. What I am saying is that people in our society are always looking and expecting the medical doctor to give them a "magic pill" that will take all their physical and emotional ailments away. Unfortunately, what people frequently find out is that the "magic pill" is not so magical and it is either not effective or leaves them feeling worse than before due to how the drug interacts with their body.
I am truly grateful to all the scientists and the pharmaceutical companies for creating medicines that are helping millions of people to recover from potentially catastrophic illnesses. However, prescription medications also have their limitations because sometimes the improvement they provide is minimal and people are still left dealing with the residual effects of their illness and/or the medication.
That's where hypnotherapy (the therapeutic use of hypnosis), can be an important adjunct to conventional medicine. I have been successful in helping hundreds of people get symptom alleviation in common ailments such as allergies, fibromyalgia, hypertension, pain, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Having a history of working in many of Austin's hospitals as a medical and emergency room social worker has allowed me the opportunity to build alliances with many of Austin's finest physicians and obtain a great understanding of conventional medical treatment for many illnesses.
The immune system is part of the mind-body system and allergies are caused by a mistake in the immune system. Dust, pollen, and other allergens are not actually a danger to the physical body but once a substance is "flagged" by the body as dangerous, it will always cause an allergic reaction until the immune system is re-educated. Hypnotherapy, when done correctly, is very good at reprogramming the immune system so that the body no longer reacts to the flagged substance.
Fibromyalgia is actually an emotional response that manifests itself in the body. The fatigue and pain in muscles and tendons are very real physical symptoms, but since the origin of fibromyalgia is in the mind, hypnotherapy is very effective in alleviating systems in 80% of the population.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be a very debilitating condition that affects up to 35 million Americans. It accounts for 10% of all visits to primary care physicians. It is characterized by chronic diarrhea, constipation, gut pain, bloating, gas, and spasms. Unfortunately, only 25% of the population is helped by conventional medical treatment. Hypnotherapy can re-educate the gastrointestinal system to work correctly and most people can become symptom free and return to a normal way of life.
Call Austin's Hypnosis Healing Center If you have been suffering from one of these medical conditions and have not gotten adequate or complete relief from conventional medicine. It should be noted that hypnotherapy is not intended to replace conventional medical treatment. Austin's Hypnosis Healing Center works in conjunction with your personal physician for many illnesses. A referral from your physician may be necessary prior to starting hypnotherapy.
